Julie Donald - Homeopath
Your Own Central Coast Homeopath
Recognising that the whole person-mind, body, spirit-is affected when there is illness, homeopathy seeks to treat that whole person. The focus is not the diseased part or the sickness, rather the totality of the individual. Homeopathic remedies stimulate the body's self-regulating mechanisms to initiate the healing process.
It works on the principle of similia similibus curentur, or “like cures like” - that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness. For example, one might treat a person suffering from insomnia with a remedy made from coffee, as coffee in the crude form, causes the symptoms of insomnia in larger doses.
Carrying on the ancient homeopath’s tradition on the Central Coast
More than 2000 years ago the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates - the founder of western medicine - was the first one to advance the idea of curing 'like with like'. Hahnemann made this principle into a system of treatment. Homeopathy has a well-documented history of use far older than almost any conventional medicines. The modern principles of the technique were laid down by Dr Samuel Hahnemann in 1796.
Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), was a German physician, who as well as being an experienced orthodox physician, was also a competent chemist, a good mineralogist and botanist, and an able translator of eight different languages. When translating Cullen’s Materia Medica he came across a text passage which stated that the curative properties of Peruvian Bark in the treatment of malaria were due to its bitter principle. Not convinced by this conclusion Hahnemann decided to consume some Peruvian bark himself. After sampling the quinine-rich cinchona bark, he found it induced malaria-like symptoms, which were in line with the principles of “like cures like”.
Taking this proof of the efficacy of homeopathic cures, Hahnemann refined his process for diluting these active ingredients – often harmful or poisonous – to safe levels. He explained his theory in the landmark homeopathic manual, “The Organon of the Healing Art”, which founded the practice of modern western homeopathy.
In the nineteenth century, this revolutionary method rapidly spread all over Europe and on to North and South America. Homeopathy also expanded through the British Empire. It came to Australia 170 years ago in the 1840’s.
